屏東縣琉球鄉長年以來，一直有一、兩百隻的綠蠵龜在此地定居，就連屏東縣長曹啟鴻也是近年來才知道．為了保護這項珍貴的生態資產，縣府向中央爭取設立保育區，避免遊客打擾，另一方面，當地的員警，則是在綠蠵龜可能出沒的岸邊，設立巡邏箱，派員按時簽到保護。
